LMDC makes SOS call to recuse a child

The Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) said it is investigating a case of alleged medical malpractice of a health professional identified as Beh Maweah Gehi of Ganta City, Nimba County, who claims to be an Ophthalmic Nurse and had performed an operation on a four-year-old male child, identified as Success Konneh.

According to preliminary investigation and documents in the possession LMDC, Mr. Gehi is a graduate of the United Methodist University, College of Winifred J. Harley, licensed by the Liberian Board for Nursing and Midwifery with License # 2142 to practice as a NURSE in Liberia and was also Certified as a Surgical Ophthalmic Nurse by the Gambia Nurse & Midwives Council on 27th July 2007 with registration number: 2243.

LMDC disclosed that the preliminary investigation has established that the practitioner operated above his scope of operation violating the 2018 Code of Code Conduct for Health Professional in Liberia, with focus on Nurses & Midwives, 7.1 “The Do’s & Don’t Do’s in Nursing/Midwifery” resulting in injury on the child’s eyes.

Considering the injury caused, LMDC stated that it is soliciting urgent medical attention abroad to quickly address the child’s condition. The effect of the surgery resulted in total blindness in the left eye and partial blindness of the right eye.

I said if prompt medical intervention abroad as recommended is not taken in time, the child is most likely to suffer complete blindness.

“The Liberia Medical and Dental Council hereby appeals to philanthropic & humanitarian organizations or individuals for assistance for urgent medical intervention.

Please contact the Liberia Medical and Dental Council on 0555235512, 0775729684, 0555234634, 0775729684 or email: lmdc.lib@gmail.com or visit our office on the JFK Compound, in Sinkor.” The call concluded.
