The Commissioner of the Liberia National Commission on Small Arms (LNCSA) Benoni Knuckles, discloses plan to register and license farmers and hunters carrying Single Barrel guns in the country so they would be tracked whenever those guns are misused.
Speaking Wednesday, 5th September in Monrovia he says hunters are only allowed to use Single Barrel guns for hunting purposes.
Mr. Knuckles notes that hunters are mostly in remote areas, underscoring the need to decentralize the small arms control unit of the Liberia National Police to help with the process in remote areas.
“The process has not yet started, but will start very soon; we will decentralize the LNP small arm control unit so that they can be in those areas where hunters are in order to be able to conduct the registration and the license process.” He says.
The LNCSA boss says the main focus is to maintain the peace that Liberia enjoys today, adding that “in order to maintain the peace, arms need to be under control, maintained and be accounted for.”
He says Liberia is making progress and that 99 percent of the government’s arms are under control and can be accounted for. “We are here to provide policy guidance, coordinate and monitor national programs aimed at eradicating illicit trade and trafficking of small arms and light weapons in Liberia and the sub-region.”
He stresses that the country needs to be violence-free while the Commission promotes non-proliferation of illicit circulation of small arms and light weapons.
He urges those with personal arms in their possession to go register those weapons. “We need to have record of all small arms in the country, before someone misuses their gun; these are things that bring chaos in the country.”
