Local based Lone Star leaves for Dakar Wednesday

The local based senior national team the Lone Star, leaves for the Senegalese capital Dakar tomorrow, Wednesday, 4 November for the 2015 West African Football Union or WAFU Nations Cup.

The tournament kicks off officially Thursday, 5 November and ends on the 11th, bringing together all 16 member countries in the regional competition. Liberia has been placed in Group 1 with host Senegal, Cape Verde, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Mauritania and Sierra Leone, while Group 2 includes Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Niger, Togo and Nigeria.

The local base Lone Star participated in the 2013 WAFU competition under former Coach Thomas Kojo, but was ejected in the first phase of the tournament in Ghana. However, the team is being headed this time around by Coach Joe Nagbe and assisted by Janjay Jacobs.

Both coaches have called to camp 18 local players, including goalkeepers Tommy Songo of LISCR FC, and Simpson Giddings of FC Fassell. Others are: Oscar Murphy Dolly of Monrovia Club Breweries; Hilton Varney of BYC1; Christopher Jackson of LISCR FC; Trokon Zeon of LISCR FC; Alpha James of BYC1; Sholee Deco Quiah of Invincible Eleven; Watanga FC’s Richard Lloyd; Van Dave Harmon of BYC1; Raymond Fransciah of Monrovia Club Breweries; Junior Barshell of BYC1; Mark Paye of BYC1; Nimba United FC’s Barbu Kollie and Sporo Somah; Prince Jetor and Alvin McConnell of BYC1; and Titu Cooper of Nimba United, respectively.
Liberian Center Referee Jerry Yekeh, who officiated in the 2013 WAFU final, has been listed among referees for the 2015 tournament.

Jerry is a 2015 FIFA batch referee and assistant chief referee of the Liberia Football Referee Association.
