Local group alarms over violation of GoL policy

The Community Development and Research Agency (CODRA) is alarming that some public schools within the Bong County school system are violating the Ministry of Education 2018-2019 academic calendar by overcharging parents above the required fees as stipulated.

Speaking in an interview with this paper recently, CODRA Executive Director Lassanah A. Dukuly said it is a complete disrespect to the Government of Liberia’s ‘pro – poor agenda when school administrators allegedly ignore government mandate while being paid by government.

Mr. Dukuly laments that charging poor parents above what the government has stipulated in the name of “gala day fees, P. E. T-shirt and catering to volunteer teachers” is repugnant and must stop now!
According to Dukuly government has outlined on Page 9 of the 2018-2019 Academic Calendar what fees parents ought to pay.

He notes that the government has said that from grades one to nine is free and compulsory, and also stipulates the fees of $1,000.00 from grades 10-12.

According to Dukuly, the amount is to be paid LRD$500.00 for first semester and LRD$500.00 for second semester.

“We do not understand why some public schools will still be collecting fees from parents that the Government of Liberia has not sanctioned,” he wonders.

CODRA says it will continue to raise the red flag until service delivery is improved, calling on parents to reject such overcharging and report any public school to the Bong County School Board.

CODRA claims it received reports that some public schools are dubiously charging as high as between LRD$5,000.00 and LRD$8,000.00 as tuition.

CODRA is carrying out massive awareness to inform parents on the government policy as contained in the 2018-2019 academic calendars.
