Local group wants US sanctions against Weah gov’t

The People Action Network (PAN) Liberia, a local civil society group is calling on the US Government to impose ‘smart sanction’ on President George Manneh Weah’s officials.

The group said during a news conference held Tuesday, 5 June in Sinkor, suburb of Monrovia that their call on the US Government to impose sanction on officials of government is to get them refrain from alleged bad leadership practices.

They say they want the US Government to impose smart sanction against the administration to safe the future of the country.According to PAN Executive Director Rufus Neufville, smart sanctions have been imposed in various neighboring countries including Libya and on Former President Charles G. Taylor and his officials here in Liberia for the protection of the forest and his bad leadership abilities.

“The George M. Weah – led government is bigger than the Legislature,” Mr. Neufville claims, adding that the president disregards the law.He says his group wants the US Government to intervene and impose this smart sanction on the Weah – led government.

He explains that the smart sanctions are not intended for the ordinary people, but target officials of government, restricting their travel and monitoring their bank accounts and their acquisition of wealth.

Meanwhile Mr. Neufville has expressed frustration over the delay of President Weah and his officials to declare their assets while coming to government. He says he was a member of the Legislature at the time the Governance Commission did the first draft of the controversial Code of Conduct that indicates that every official coming into government should declare their assets.

He says when laws are passed, it is good to understand the background of the laws and the intent. According to him, President Weah and all of his officials have allegedly deliberately refused to declare their assets, saying because of their refusal to declare their assets, there is no way people can determine their entry and exit of government.

According to Amb. Neufville, the president has broken down many of his structures and is building sky scrapers and has allegedly acquired an airplane.
