LRA educates local manufacturers

The Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) has held a one-day tax clinic for local manufacturers in the country to introduce them to the new Excise and Goods Tax return forms.

The interactive discussion was attended by about 50 taxpayers in the alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages subsector of the economy, held at the LRA Headquarters in Paynesville, outskirt of Monrovia. The Commissioner of Domestic Tax at the LRA Darlingston Y. Talery, said the interaction was intended to educate that category of taxpayers on how to calculate and complete the new Excise and Goods Tax return forms in keeping with the Liberia Revenue Code.

Commissioner Talery told the local manufacturers that tax payment islawful and intended to support government’s development agenda. He also advised them to cultivate an attitude of voluntary compliance as large taxpayers and responsible businesses.

“You are our partners, and your partnership and collaboration are required as we work together in raising revenue to support the country’s development,” he stated. For their part, the manufacturers applauded the LRA for the initiative, with several of them calling for additional meetings and education on the new processes of filing their tax returns especially, since it is computer-based.

Meanwhile, the LRA has published a professional ethics and code of conduct to guide and align staff behaviors at every level in the execution of their daily functions. Commissioner General Elfrieda Stewart Tamba said in a bid to achieve the mission and vision of building an efficient and effective revenue administration service consistent with regional and international revenue administration standards, each staff of the LRA must be accountable for adhering to the adopted values and ethical principles, the Revenue Code of Liberia and the Act creating the LRA.

Commissioner Tamba in her introductory message in the Code, saidit is the responsibility of each staff to read, fully understand, adhere to and sign the Professional Ethics and Code of Conduct, which shall serve as reference and guidance for their actions.

The professional ethics and code of conduct among other things required employees to display a high sense of honesty, fairness, loyalty and impartiality in the discharge of their duties, avoiding every form of temptation and collusion at the detriment of the State and taxpayers.

Employees are compelled to be law abiding, careful with public assets, behave ethically and discharge their duties and responsibilities efficiently and effectively as required by the LRA Act as well as other attending laws, including the Revenue Code of Liberia.

The nearly 30-page booklet explains the role and responsibilities of the Authority to its staff and the public and the role of the staff to the authority and the public, while it also guides employees in executing their functions as it relates to treatment of colleagues, stakeholders, taxpayers, suppliers and the general public.
