MIA begins high-level consultation

A weeklong consultation and sensitization exercise aimed at rationalizing the administrative structures of local government has gotten underway in southeast Liberia. The local government administrative structures are cities, townships, districts, clans, and general towns.

According to statistics, there are 141 Cities, 244 Townships, 129 Districts, 240 Chiefdoms, 580 Clans and 1198 General Towns. Of these structures, many cities in Liberia have little or no basic social services such as electricity, education, health, water supply as well as economic activities.

A release from the Ministry of Internal Affairs said the consultation and sensitization exercise is taken place with key stakeholders in Greenville, Sinoe County and Barclayville, Grand Kru County from November 25-29, 2014.

The exercise is bringing together legislators, political parties, civil society organizations and heads of sub-national administrative structures from River Gee, Maryland Grand Kru and Sinoe counties, respectively.

The rationalization exercise is component of the National Decentralization program, a flagship program of the Liberian government intend to enhance shared governance establish an effective service delivery system at the local level.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Internal Affairs Minister for Urban Affairs, Amos Tweh, said the forum was in line with government’s plan to re-arrange Liberia’s local government administrative system. The exercise is under the auspices of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in collaboration with the Governance Commission, with support from the UNDP and other partners.

The southeast forum follows a first in the series of regional consultation which took place in Tubmanburg, Bomi in June, 2014 attended by participants drawn from Montserrado, Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, Gbarpolu and Margibi Counties.
