MOH celebrates World Diabetes Day today

The Ministry of Health in collaboration with its partners joins the global community today, 14 November to celebrate World Diabetes Day under the global theme “The Family and Diabetes.”Diabetes is a disease in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood and urine.

The day is celebrated annually on November 14. Led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), World Diabetes Day was organized in 1991 in partnership with the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes.

According to the Ministry of Health, the day is being celebrated with a local slogan, ‘Diabetes Concern Every Family in Liberia.’A MOH release stresses the need to sensitize the public, including a call to action for the population to join the fight and control diabetes.

The release says the Ministry of Health and its technical partners have organized series of events this month, including talk shows, community engagement and screening of people with diabetes and related conditions.

Today’s celebration is being characterized with a street parade beginning at the Samuel K. Doe sports Complex in Congo Town to the Ministry of Health where an indoor program will be held.
