Monopix Supermarket’s fence injures 2, destroys homes

A fence around Monopix Supermarket in Buku Town community, Montserrado County electoral district#15 collapses here, injuring two residents and destroying several zinc shacks.

The victims include 15-year-old Prince Parker and Antrice Difon, 13, who were trapped under their respective structures. Parker sustains severe wounds on his back and neck, while Difon suffers broken right hand.

The fence belonging to Monopix Supermarket was constructed several years ago in the community, and had been undermined by erosion.

Speaking to this paper Tuesday, 21 August at the scene of the incident, victim Prince Parker narrates he and his relatives were asleep Tuesday when the fence collapsed on the roof of their house around 7:00 AM, leaving him entrapped under the broken wall.

He discloses that to his surprise, he saw himself admitted at Mawa Clinic in Vai Town, Bushrod Island while Antrice Difon, who resides in another house close to the fence, broke his right hand when the wall fell on their house.

According to Parker, a total of 10 residents were affected by the incident that saw all of their properties, including household appliances and furniture smashed by the tumbling wall.
Another victim, Doctor D. Johnson, says he and his family survived thru the grace of God, but they lost all personal effects.
He narrates that following the incident, the Management of Monopix Supermarket agreed to underwrite cost of the damages done to their houses and properties, but is yet to show any seriousness about the conditions of affected residents, some of whom have nowhere to sleep with their children.
A visit by this paper to the area saw contractors, including masoners clearing the huge broken wall in order to reconstruct another fence.

When contacted, a female staff of the company, who asked for anonymity, explains her boss was in a meeting and could not talk to the press.

However, she confirms that Management promises to underwrite cost for damages suffered by the residents, but through its insurer, Blue Cross Insurance Company in Monrovia.

She terms as erroneous, allegations by some of the victims that since the incident occurred, Management hasn’t shown any concern about their plights.

When this writer visited offices of the Blue Cross Insurance Company, he was informed the company was closed.
