Montserrado District#17 group awards scholarship

United Youth for Sustainable Development based in Brewerville outside Monrovia offers one year scholarship to Student Kpanah Nyumah of the Pamela Kay High School to attend the University of Liberia after graduation.

Ben Sonie, head of the group explains to this paper in an exclusive interview over the weekend that the decision to award Kpanah the scholarship is based on her performance from a just-ended quizzing tournament held in District#17, Brewerville where she emerged as winner.

He says his organization hosted a quizzing tournament in the district with many schools participating, but Student Nyumah came as the ‘Most Valuable Player’ of the tournament among a total of 32 schools that participated based on her intellectual ability.

He says the tournament was sponsored by a local organization in partnership with his group to enhance students’ performance in the district. “The scholarship giving to the MVP comes with a responsibility and that is for her to maintain GPA 3.2 in order to allow her continue her study”, Mr. Sonie says, noting that failure to earn the grade point, she will drop from the scholarship.

He says the objective of the united youth for sustainable development is to fight for justice in the district, and to create an avenue where young people could have opportunity to acquire knowledge whether vocational or technical education.

Ben narrates that the organization, which was established in 2015, is also in the vanguard of advocating for social justice for kids that are being abandoned, saying, “Check in most of these universities, we have students that are benefiting from our scholarship and other programs.”

The beneficiary of the scholarship Kpanah Nyumah, expresses delight for the opportunity provided her by the organization, and notes that the scholarship is a clear indication that she actually won the MVP title for her school.

“I m so happy for this scholarship given me; I think it is an opportunity for me to show my academic strength at the university, and let make this call to all my friends that the best way for us girls is education”, he underscores.
