Mother abandons 2 weeks old baby

The women and children protection unit of the Liberia National Police in Ganta, Nimba County is investigating the whereabouts of the mother of a two weeks old infant reportedly abandoned in the hands of a host in Deakehmie community,Ganta city.

Mother abandons

The unknown mother is yet to be identified, but she is believed to have come from an unknown destination and entered Deakehmie in Ganta, where she pleaded with a family to lodge her and the baby for a night while enroute to Totota, Bong County the next day.

But according to residents, at about 5 a.m. the following day, she left the baby in the house and went out, and has never returned.  The NewDawnNimba correspondent said this is not the first time for a mother to abandon her baby for an unknown destination.

Few weeks ago, another woman abandoned her baby in Flumpa, electoral district#1 along the Ganta-Saclepea highway. The infant is said to have spent few days in the hands of its host and died.

The incident has sparked debate among residents of Ganta with some describing the act by mothers as indecent, pointing out that the future of any child is unknown, so babies should not be subjected to such fate, while others thing government should put in place mechanism that would curb the behavior.

Yet, others caution how to go about in accommodating strangers as some of them could put their host in trouble like the current incident with the unnamed family inDeakehmie.
