Murder suspect nabbed after ten years

Prosecutors in River Gee County, southeast Liberia have taken custody of a murder suspect from Sinoe County authorities after ten years of absconding trial and allegedly engaging in illicit mining activities at the Sinoe National Park.

Before his arrest recently for “attempted murder” of a victim at an illicit mine at the Sarpo National Park in Sinoe, defendant Jerry Queity and his brother Festus Queity had already been jointly indicted in 2005 for allegedly murdering their brother-in-law Jolobo Wesseh in Fish Town, River Gee County, Attorney Wesseh A. Wesseh says.

The name of the latest “attempted murder victim” in Sinoe is being withheld by authorities; and Attorney Wesseh says the defendant was transferred under the jurisdiction of River Gee prosecutors because the murder charge supersedes the “attempted murder and theft of property” charges brought against him by Sinoe authorities.

Due to lack of police station in Fish Town in 2005, Attorney Wesseh says the defendants were sent to Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County and detained at a police station, but they later broke jail from the Zwedru Police Station in 2006.

He said they ran to neighbouring Ivory Coast where they were subsequently re-arrested and sent back to River Gee County. But said since River Gee County did not have a custody in which to contain the defendants at the time, the court there decided to put defendants Jerry and Festus Queity on bail in which their uncle Isaac Tolber signed as their surety.

They were indicted by the grand jury for River Gee in 2008, but fled again when the case was ready to be heard during the midterm of court of 2008. This prompted the court to issue a general arrest order against the defendants to have them arrested.

After being re-arrested recently, Attorney Wesseh says defendant Jerry Queity claimed that his brother co-defendant Festus Queity and their uncle Isaac Tolber who stood as surety have all died. When he was taken to a magisterial court in Sinoe, Attorney Wesseh says a Magistrate there noticed that defendant Jerry Queity was already a wanted man for murder in River Gee, and therefore contacted Sinoe County Attorney who then revealed Jerry’s arrest to his River Gee counterpart, Atty. Wesseh.
