National Registry enrolls 9,012 citizens

The National Identification Registry or NIR has registered 9,012 Liberians, it commenced official operation here, executive director J. Tiah Nagbe, discloses.

Addressing a news conference Thursday, 5 April at the Ministry of Information on Capitol Hill, he says the NIR is on the verge of opening sub-centers in all 15 counties, saying that people would not have to leave from far places to come to Monrovia to obtain National Identification Card.

According to him, the Registry is being equipped and would have capacity to register about 6,000 persons daily in what he describes as world class registry. The NIR director continues that before enrolling into the process, applicants are screened carefully to make sure their information is not misleading.

Nagbe notes that requirements for application include: birth certificate, Voter Registration Card, Liberian Passport and Naturalization documents, adding that the process is open to all Liberians and non-Liberians resident here.

He says as part of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning and the Civil Service Agency, all government officials are to enroll into this process as
part of President George Weah’s 150-day Pro-Poor deliverables.

He details that when the ID cards are issued, personal information of individuals will be stored in the system of the registry, continuing that each card contains a small chip embedded in the ID card that stores successful applicants’ personal data.

The NIR is expected to register about 4.5 million Liberians across the country. Citizens and Non-Liberian residents may use the cards for national identification, open bank accounts and voter registration purposes respectively, among others.

The exercise, initiated during the administration of slain President Samuel Kanyon Doe, was reintroduced here by former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
