Monrovia, Liberia, February 4, 2025 –The National Teachers Association of Liberia (NTAL) rejects allegations of corruption against its leadership, specifically targeting the current president, Madam Mary Nyumah.

Recently, a group of dues-paying members of the NTAL raised concerns about alleged impropriety through an eleven-count resolution. The resolution demands that the Nyumah-led administration submit to an independent audit to clarify the financial activities of the Association over the past six years.

During a peaceful demonstration in front of the NTAL’s office on 12th Street in Monrovia, spokesperson Lydia Massaquoi voiced the group’s demands.

She urged veterans of the Association, the Ministry of Education, and the Liberia National Police to pressure the leadership to comply with the audit requested.

The petition called for a mass sitting action by majority of the national executive committee at the NTAL headquarters to compel Madam Nyumah to adhere to the audit request.

The petitioners also indicated that their legal team intends to petition the Civil Law Court at the Temple of Justice in Monrovia to request that various banks freeze NTAL’s accounts for a period of 90 to 180 days, pending an audit and a report presented to the representative council, as stipulated in the Association’s constitution.

She emphasized that the NTAL leadership has already undergone an audit by an independent firm known as More Monrovia, as per the Association’s constitution.

Madam Nyumah clarified that the representative council and the national executive committee that authorized the audit await its findings.

She reiterated that the Constitution provides specific channels for such actions against elected officials.

She addressed status of Samuel Johnson, stating that he is no longer associated with NTAL, having been officially dismissed by the general assembly during a recent meeting held in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County.

Madam Nyumah cautioned genuine Association members to be mindful of individuals posing as leaders, warning that it would be too late to recover their losses should they fall victim to such deceit. Editing by Jonathan Browne
