NEC commences Lofa recount Friday

NEC Liberia NDThe National Elections Commission or NEC will this Friday, June 5, 2015 commence a recount of votes cast between candidates of the Alliance for Peace and Democracy and the Liberty Party in the 2014 Special Senatorial Election in two districts in Lofa County.

The districts involved include Electoral District#1 in Kolahun and Electoral District#4 in Voinjama, Lofa County.

According to a press statement, the decision is in compliance with a Supreme Court ruling handed down on Monday, June 1, 2015 in the Election Irregularities Case between the Alliance for Peace and Democracy or APD on one hand and the National Elections Commission all poll workers, the Liberty Party Candidate in the 2014 Special Senatorial Election, Stephen Zargo and Representative Eugene Fallah Kpakar on the other.

Accordingly, the Supreme Court’s Ruling mandates the commission to complete the recount within 15 days.

Meanwhile, the National Elections Commission Tuesday invited representatives of political parties, Press Union of Liberia, Elections Coordinating Committee, Liberia National Bar Association, media and the religious community, among others, to attend the reading of the Supreme Court’s Mandate at the headquarters of the Commission in Monrovia. The December 2014 Special Senatorial Election has be characterized by protests by losing candidates before the Supreme Court, challenging outcome of the poll and seeking recount. Press Statement
