NEC receives US$1.2m

The National Elections Commission says it has US$1.2 Million needed to conduct representative by-elections in Montserrado County Electoral District #13 and one senatorial by-election in Sinoe County, southeast Liberia, respectively.

Addressing a news conference in Monrovia Monday, October 01, NEC Chairman Cllr. Jerome George Korkoya discloses the Government of Liberia has provided funds needed for the two by-elections slated for November 20th.

On 06 September NEC announced the two by-elections are as a result of the election of former Representative Saah Joseph of Montserrado District 13 as Senator for the county in the July 31, 2018 by-elections in Montserrado, while the senatorial by-election for Sinoe County comes as a result of Senator Joseph Nagbe’s appointment as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, replacing retired Justice Philip Banks. Justice Banks retired after reaching the constitutional retirement age of 70 years.

The by-elections are the second this year since the election of President George Weah as 24th President of the Republic of Liberia.

Making the announcement, NEC co-chair Sarah Jegede Toe says candidate nomination process is ongoing and will end on October 20, while the elections are set for November 20, 2018 in both counties.
