Nigerian envoy hosts dinner for Dr. Sawyer

The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria H.E Chigozie Obi-Nnadozie on Wednesday evening hosted a dinner at the residence in honor of Former Interim President Prof. Dr. Amos C Sawyer 70th birthday amidst high level presence of Nigerians from various sectors in Liberia and senior government officials, family, church members and friends.

The ECOWAS Ambassador to Liberia H.E Babatunde Olarewaju Ajisom and H. E African Union Ambassador Oluwatoyin Solaja were in attendance. ECOWAS ambassador confirmed that both a Commissioner from the Ecowas Secretariat will join former head of the Commission Mohamed Ibn Chambas at the International symposium Schedule to take place in early July at the Monrovia City Hall.

Also in attendance were the Top military brass of the Nigerian contingent serving in UNMIL some of whom had worked with Dr. Sawyer during his tenure as Interim President of the Government of National Unity 1990 to 1994.

Ambassador Obi-Nnadozie spoke with heartwarming praises and was most generous in the accolades and words of appreciation showered on Prof Sawyer in appreciation of the role that he has and continues to play in Africa in promoting democracy peace and development.

She informed the well attended dinner of notable dignitaries from both Liberia and Nigeria that it was with immense pride and satisfaction she can speak of his invaluable contribution and role in the just ended elections in Nigeria when Prof Sawyer chaired the team of the AU in what has been described as the great and historic peaceful democratic civilian transition in Nigeria. She said the peoples of the sub region and indeed the entire continent remain grateful for his experience and courage when all the issues surrounding the elections appear contentious in what many political analyst describe as a make or break elections for Africa’s largest and most populous democracy.

Amb. Obi-Nnadozie herself an academic and career diplomat also commended Prof Sawyer for his considerable laurels he has achieved in his academic life and the wealth of experience he has brought to bear which makes him a good friend of Nigeria and one well worth appreciating in the sub region.

It can be recalled that on June 15 during a luncheon festivities marking the actual 70th birthday celebrations which members of the Staff tendered in honor of the Chairman of the Commission, Her Excellence Obi-Nnadozie in making remarks of appreciation amongst other kinds sentiments expressed informed Dr. Sawyer of her readiness to host and honor him on such an admirable and remarkable milestone in his life of service in particular to strengthen the great bonds of friendship and brotherliness between the peoples of Liberia and Nigeria.
