Gender Minister Julia Ducan Cassell has stressed the need for parents to take the education of their girls as an important investment.

Speaking Monday at the official program marking the 4th observance of the International Day of the Girl Child here, Minister Cassell said parents should encourage girls to go to school and go into the teaching field.

The International Day of the Girl Child is observed on October 11 of every year.  She said the observance of the International Day of the Girl Child around the globe is intended to promote the social and economic development of adolescent girls and young women, something she said her ministry in collaboration with partners have continued to do here.

Mrs. Cassell said the need for girl’s empowerment cannot be over emphasized because such empowerment can be translated into a greater strength for national development. She said as part of efforts to encourage girls education here, her ministry has opened an all girls boarding school. She said the initiative is to encourage the girls to stay in school.
