Peace Island becomes borough

The House of Representatives has endorsed an act creating Peace Island Community as a borough in Congo Town, outside Monrovia. Speaking to journalists at the Capitol Tuesday, 6 June, Representative Julius F. Berrien said the Peace Island Community is one of the renowned communities in District #10 and has the population of 38,000.

A joint legislative committee report says it takes into considering the rapid growth of Peace Island with a population of about 38,000 inhabitants as well as infrastructure developments like schools, clinics, recreational centers, churches and mosques.

The report also says residents of Peace Island are peaceful Liberian citizens and have lived in the community for the past 20 years, thus craving the indulgence of the plenary to pass the act into law.

The report suggests that Article 20 (a) of the Liberian Constitution provides that no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, security, property, privileges and any other right.
Rep. Berrien says the people of the Peace Island Community are very peaceful and have been living in the area for the past 17 years and have been law abiding.

According to Rep. Berrien, the people have seen the need for good governance, which he endorses to give them a place to live. He says the creation of Peace Island as a borough is a milestone for the people of that community, adding that they have the right to live and be protected under the law.
