Phila Institute to dedicate Tenneh’s grave

The Administration of Phila Institute, a senior high school located on Christopolis Road in Brewerville, Montserrado County District #17 says it is in full preparation to dedicate the grave of late Tenneh who was killed in 1957 by Gortokai.

Tenneh is one of the main characters in a popular Liberian literature book titled “Murder in the Cassava Patch,” written by one of Liberia’s famous writers the late Bai T. Moore which is being taught in various high schools across the country.

In a exclusive interview with this paper on Saturday, 7 April, the principal of Phila Institute Mr. Morris L. Sambola said the idea of reconstructing Tenneh’s grave is to bring back the lost image and to create the avenue where students will be able to see the grave of late Tenneh for themselves after learning about it in Literature.

But carrying on an awareness on the dedication of the grave, Phila Institute Principal added that his school paid a courtesy visit at Foday Town where the late Bai T. Moore and Tenneh were buried to give the students a clearer picture of what they have been learning in the book Murder in the Cassava Patch.

He said since the death of the late Tenneh in 1957, no one has taken up time to actually visit the grave of the two characters, noting that family members claim that people only go at times to take picture and leave.

But he says his school through the help of its student council government has thought it wise to reconstruct the grave as a project to give students and other citizens reason to visit the site where Tenneh was buried after she was killed.

According to Mr. Sambola the awareness today is centered around the upliftment of the late Tenneh’s grave which he says has been in bad condition. He added that the rock that Gortokai used to sharpen his cutlass is also wearing away.

He has called on well meaning Liberians, and schools administrators to follow the example and take their students out and show them some historic places. For his part, Phila Institute Students Council Government president James K. Mulbah pointed out that the decision of the students council government to work with the administration is to provide the opportunity for future generation to have an insight and see the grave of Tenneh.
