Pres. Sirleaf receives MCC delegation

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Monday received Madam Dana Hyde, Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) as head of a high-powered MCC delegation. Other members of the delegation included Ambassador Christine Elder, Kateri Clement, and Dominique Dieudonne among others.

According to an Executive Mansion release, President Sirleaf welcomed Madam Hyde and delegation and expressed delight to break the good news about progress in the energy sector including finishing works on the Mount Coffee Hydro Plant.

The Liberian leader recalled that the MCC and Liberian government officials worked cordially and diligently to reach MCC Compact, which enabled strong support to the hydro project and other areas including the roads. “It has been a long journey and Liberians have waited for this day and are very excited about meeting the December 2016 timeline for the completion of the hydro”, President Sirleaf told the visiting MCC delegation.

President Sirleaf then requested the Board Chairperson of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) and Mr. MonieCaptan of MCC-Liberia to provide update to the delegation on progress made in their respective sectors.

For her part, the Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, Dana Hyde thanked President Sirleaf for receiving the MCC delegation and noted that Liberia’s road towards eligibility for MCC Compact was long. She informed President Sirleaf that data available for the upcoming score-card of the MCC for 2016 shows that Liberia has made progress in many areas.
“This represents good news for the country. The MCC is very focused on the next year and is also keen on the financial viability of the energy sector. We will support the new management team that will be the fruit of the transition that is expected in the energy sector and the Liberia Electricity Corporation”, Madam Hyde noted.

She pointed out that her delegation will pay a visit at the site of the hydro project to see at first- hand the progress that has been made and thanked the Government of Liberia for keeping the focus and realizing the bigger dream for the energy sector.

The MCC Chief Executive Officer also expressed support for the maintenance of roads in Liberia through the Road Fund being established by the Liberian Government.
