Presidential Taskfroce chief faces court

The head of the Presidential Task Force set up to retrieve stolen government vehicles, Mr. Benedict E. Reeves appeared before the Monrovia City Court Tuesday, 29 May to meet up with a two – hour deadline given by Magistrate Kennedy Peabody.

It came after series of communications from the court to get the Task Force address some complaints of alleged unlawful vehicle seizures. According to Magistrate Peabody, some victim had sued the Taskforce for seizing vehicles that they bought from the General Services Agency (GSA) and the Court wanted the truth.

One of those communications was a writ of summons against Mr. Reeves for a crime of felonious restraint in which Magistrate Peabody ordered the Task Force Chief to appear before the Court based on complaint of seizing a vehicle of one Badon on Clay Street on 24 May.

Discussions between Magistrate Peabody and Mr. Reeves who was accompanied by Deputy Information Minister Eugene Fahngon were not held in open court but in Chambers, thus the media did not witness how it all went on.

But in a chat with Magistrate Peabody, he told a team of journalists at his office that during meeting with Mr. Reeves, he was told that he (Mr. Reeves) did not see the communications from the Court, but they were received by an assistant minister.

The Magistrate says he was told that the official who received the communications from the Court did not give them to the Task Force chief. However, Magistrate Peabody says he told the officials that they want to be leaders and thus, they have to respect authority by honoring invitation from the Court. He says the matter was settled amicably, with promise by the Task Force to honor court invitations.
