Rep. Nyumalin worried over reports delayed in committee room

Representative Francis S. Nyumalin of Lofa County district #1 is concerned over delay in committee rooms of several audit reports from the General Auditing Commission since they were submitted to the House many years ago.

He recalls that following the 14 years of civil conflict and subsequent restoration of democratic governance, a number of anti-graft institutions, including the GAC were established and reactivated for the sole purpose of strengthening the country’s young democracy by vigorously fighting corruption, using these institutions.

He explains that over 100 audits were conducted and reports of same subsequently submitted to the legislature through the public accounts committee, but to date, most of them remain unattended to thereby, leaving those accused of improprieties moving about with gross unprecedented impunity.

He notes that it is against this backdrop and in an endeavor to intensify the corruption fight and reduce negative perception being perpetrated against the legislature, pending hearing on the rest of the audit reports should be conducted with urgency or the reports be discharged from committee room and turned over to an adhoc committee for expediency and prudence.

After heated argument by members of the House, Speaker Bhofa Chambers took seize of the motion. Addressing reporters subsequently, Rep. Nyumalin thanks Speaker Chambers for taking seize of the motion, maintaining that he would reintroduce the communication even if he has to do it 100 times.
