Samaritan’s Purse restores sight of many Liberians
Samaritan’s Purse concludes week-long cataract program here for the second year in a row. The program allows patients with little or no medical access to receive screenings, diagnoses, and life-changing surgeries free of charge.
Through partnerships of organizations and programs such as SIM, ELWA Hospital and its staff, Dr. Robert F. Dolo and the New Sight Eye Center, LRA- Duty Free importation of supplies, and the Liberia Medical and Dental Association, the endeavor was a monumental achievement that allowed hundreds of lives to be significantly improved for years to come.
According to a press release, due to the tireless work and efforts of Samaritan’s Purse and partners, the program resulted to 140 cataract surgeries along with treatment of 84 cases of Allergic Conjunctivitis, 37 cases of Presbyopia, 37 cases of Pterygium, 13 cases of Uveitis, 12 cases of Retinal Detachment, 12 cases of Pseudophakic Eye, 4 Corneal Ulcers, 4 cases of Macular Degeneration, and 2 cases of Retinoblastoma, respectively.
When asked why she helps conduct the Cataract Program each year, Karen Daniels, RN for Samaritan’s Purse says, “How can we not? Knowing we have the skill, the resources to assist, and that it takes only 10 minutes to help a cataract patient see again, how can we not utilize all that we’ve been given to help restore one of the most precious gifts God’s given us?”
Samaritan’s Purse Liberia has been working in the country since 2004. It responds to physical and spiritual needs of individuals in crisis situations.
