Sanniquellie Central Prison deplorable

Sanniquellie Central17-year-old murder convict Jacob Vanboe serving a life sentence

Conditions at the Sanniquellie Central Prison in Nimba County are said to be deplorable with hundreds of inmates left in complete darkness, including lack of drugs, food, electricty and vihecles to transport them to hospital for medication.

The prison was earlier supported by the United Nations Mission in Liberia, but since UNMIL departed Sanniquellie as part of its ongoing drawdown, the inmates have been generally abandoned with neither government nor NGOs providing care.

During a recent visit to the prison compound by our Nimba correspondent, the inmates, some of whom are serving life sentences, complained of lack of food and medication as well as power. They said a clinic they used to go for medication was shutdown due to lack of drugs, while the only vihecle that had been transporting them to the G.W.Harley Hospital is also borken down.

Seventeen-year-old Jacob Vanboe, who is serving a life sentence for murder complained of experiecing pain in his chest for the past two weeks with medication. Jacob was convicted about a month ago for murdering a motorcyclist outside the commercial capital, Ganta City.
