Sen. Johnson faces Senate probe

The President Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate has formulated a special committee headed by Grand Gedeh County Senator Marshall Dennis, to investigate Bomi County Senator Sando Dazoe Johnson on allegation levied against him by a businessman James E. Cooper, Chief Executive Officer of Cooper Rubber Company and Vice President of the Rubber Planters Association of Liberia.

The investigation is based on a complaint filed by CEO Cooper, besides a secret recording released on the Bomi County Senator in which he is heard discussing how to chop funds intended for the rubber sector.
In the recording, Senator Johnson is heard asserting people can eat government’s money and nothing would happen.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Secretary General the National Patriotic Party of incarcerated former President Charles Taylor wants his NPP colleague (Sen. Johnson) to do the most honorable thing by resigning from the Senate to save the integrity of that body and restore investors’ confidence.

Mr. Eric Kennedy notes that a culture of impunity undermines the fabric of the nation, and should not continue to persist.

He wants the Liberian Senate to expel Senator Johnson if he refuses to resign, a measure he says, would serve as a deterrence to public officials who take unrestrained pleasure in violating public trust.

The committee is mandated to report to the leadership of the senate in the soonest possible time to resolve what is termed as embarrassing situation on the senator.

However, Senator Johnson has filed a legal suit against the vice president of the Rubber Planters Association of Liberia Mr. Cooper, for defamation of character.
