Sen. Sherman receives punches

Grand Cape Mount County Senator Cllr. Varney G. Sherman’s recent charges against President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, accusing the President of masterminding his arrest and subsequent indictment on multiple charges, including bribery continues to receive sharp public reaction here.

A local group, Free Conscious Independent and Objective Thinkers of Liberia describes Sen. Sherman’s assertion as ridiculous, unfortunate and embarrassing.  The Grand Cape Mount County Senator is on trial in connection with the Global Witness bribery report.

“It is unfair that Senator Sherman will attempt to malign and defame President Sirleaf in such a manner when in fact there is no proof that the Government of Liberia through President Sirleaf influenced or wrote the Global Witness Report”, the group notes in a statement released in Monrovia.

It says Senator Varney Sherman knew about the Global Witness Report before it came out because he was contacted by Mr. Jonathan Gant of Global Witness to respond to queries contained in the report.

The Free Conscious Independent and Objective Thinkers of Liberia further disagree with Senator Sherman’s assertion that without the support of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the governing Unity Party is capable of winning the October 10, 2017 Presidential and Legislative elections.

“Senator Sherman is completely out of order for making such assertion because it is a proven fact that President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is the senior architect for the record success of the Unity Party from 1997 to 2011, and to rule her out of Vice President Joseph Boakai’s victory for the Presidency in 2017 is tantamount to committing a political suicide.”

The statement issued under the signature of Chairman Morris A.S. Swen, Sr., says Senator Sherman’s assertion against President Sirleaf is counterproductive, potentially dangerous and has the proclivity to create a serious divide amongst the membership, leadership ranks, and sympathizers of the governing Unity Party, which by extension, will adversely affect the chances of Vice President Boakai at the polls.

It therefore, cautions Vice President Joseph N. Boakai to be mindful of Senator Sherman’s overt maneuvers geared at putting asunder the level of cordiality and respectability that exist between him and President Sirleaf, saying, “VP Boakai must understand that President Sirleaf’s support to him is a cardinal and undisputed factor that cannot be underrated.” The Free Thinkers call on Senator Sherman to refrain from acts that could disrupt the course of victory for Vice President Joseph N. Boakai for the Presidency. Statement
