Severe Ebola drop in Liberia, Guinea, and S/Leone

The United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) has reported a decline in the number of confirmed Ebola cases in the three most affected Ebola hit countries of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

According to its Weekly Situational Analysis released Friday, as of 10 April 2015, a total of 30 confirmed Ebola cases were reported in the week to April 5, the lowest weekly total since the third week of May 2014.

As of April 10, a total of 25,556 confirmed, probable and suspected cases of Ebola and 10,587 deaths have been reported in the three most affected countries, the UNMEER report revealed.

The weekly situational report disclosed that of the 30 confirmed cases, Guinea reported 21 as compared to the 57 confirmed cases in the previous week; Sierra Leone reported a fifth consecutive weekly decrease with 9 cases as opposed to the 25 in the previous week, while Liberia reported no confirmed cases.

The report further states that there were no new health worker infections reported in Liberia in the week to April 5, 2015.

Six regions in western Guinea, including the capital Conakry, reported at least one confirmed case in the week to April 5 as compared to seven in the previous week while in Sierra Leone, there were no reported cases for 3 days during the week to April 5, the report explained.

It confirmed that in Liberia, the last person confirmed to have been infected with the virus died in March 2015, and that investigations are ongoing to establish the origin of the infection while a total of 332 contacts associated with the case are being monitored.

The UNMEER situational report indicates that the response indicators for Guinea continue to present a mixed picture as 37 percent of confirmed Ebola deaths in the week to April 5 were identified through examination as compared to 43 percent in the previous week.
