Shooting at Sime Darby Plantation

Security working for the Malaysian oil giant, Sime Darby Liberia has been shot at by criminal who went to steal palm at its plantation.

The incident occurred last month in the township of Madina, where several illegal mill operators exist.
According to police sources, the palm criminal, who was on a motorbike, was intercepted by Preston Nunuh, the security officer. The alleged suspect had reportedly taken several palm brunch from the plantation and was on his way to an unknown place.

“Early this week(July 25), while on patrol at the plantation in the Gbah area, Sime Darby Security came across some allege criminals who were taking away their palm brunch. In the proses of confronting the criminals, one of them shot at the security, Moses Carter police spokesman said.

Carter added, the victim was taken clinic for medication. He said, the police was investigating the case, while the criminal is at large.

“Preston got into a scuffle with one of the crop thieves, who was trying to escape with his (Preston) motorcycle. During the scuffle, the suspect used his pistol to fire a shot into the left thigh of Preston Nunuh. He then reloaded his pistol to fire another shot, after which Preston decided not to risk his life and let him go,” a police source explains.

Sources at the plantation said, that one of the criminals has been arrested by the police and others were at large.

There have been several calls by management and civil society organizations from the county for government to help improve security.

Not only that, but also for government to help remove ex-combatants (many of them are not employees) who are still living on company’s properties.

“The issue of thief in Madina is serious. The company needs to work hard, but the government needs to help. In the concession agreement, part of it says that, there should be no mills within six kilometers to the farm. But they have mills all over the place here,” Samuel Jenekai a resident said.
According to residents, this is not the first time for criminal to shoot at someone.

When this paper contacted workers at the plantation, they confirmed the shooting of the security but caution if care were not taken, greater one would happen one day. Editing by Jonathan Browne
