The Liberian government has been urged to shut down substandard firms involved in producing water for sale to the public in order to create a conducive environment for the water market in the country.
The managing director of the Enjoy Mineral Water, a Liberian-owned business in Paynesville, a suburb of Monrovia made the call on Wednesday when he spoke with reporters. Speaking at his office in Zayzay Community, Mr. Hassan M.Sesay said the proliferation of substandard mineral water companies in the country is creating serious setback for serious minded Liberians, who have invested huge capitol in the business.
He said the proliferation of substandard water companies, has depreciated the values of the sale of the commodity thereby posing serious challenge to those companies that are in full adherence to government tax payment.
Mr. Sesay noted there are unscrupulous Liberians, who are polluting the water market simply because they have one water machine thus, spoiling (lowering) prices of the commodity, while sacrificing quality at the expense of bigger companies.
The Liberian businessman lamented that due to the situation, Liberians generally are being made to drink all kinds of unsafe water which continue to create serious health problems for the citizenry.
Mr. Sesay clarified that his call for government’s intervention is not meant to put rival water companies out of business but to ensure that those individuals involved in the business operate in line with guidelines and standards set by the Ministry of Commerce, the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation and other relevant agencies of government.
He also appealed to government to assist Liberian water producing companies to partner with foreign-owned businesses aimed at straightening the growth and development of the water market throughout the country.
