Sirleaf -no candidate for CBL Governorship

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf says her son Charles Sirleaf is no candidate for the Central Bank of Liberia or CBL governorship. Her comments over the weekend follows media report that Mr. Sirleaf is being tipped to succeed former CBL Governor J. Mills Jones who stepped down barley two weeks ago.

Mr. Sirleaf was selected by the CBL Board of Governors to act as governor following Dr. Jones resignation something media reports suggested was to pave his way to the Bank’s highest post. But President Sirleaf denied having any hand in the Board’s decision. “President Sirleaf has said she has no hand in the determination of the Board of Governors of the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) to name Mr. Charles Sirleaf, Acting Executive Governor of the CBL and furthered that during the appropriate vetting to formally appoint a new Executive Governor of the Bank – Mr. Sirleaf will not be a candidate,” a statement from the president’s office said.

Mr. Sirleaf 58, is the second son President Sirleaf. He joined the CBL in January 2004 and has served in various departments including Banking and Finance and was named Deputy Governor for Operations, a position he held before his appointment as acting Governor.
