Special service planned for Ellen’s 79th birthday

A special service is being planned at the First United Methodist Church (FUMC) on Ashmum Street in Monrovia in observance of the 79th birthday celebration of Africa’s first female elected President Mrs. Ellen Johnson – Sirleaf this Sunday, 29 October.

The final celebration of her birthday while still a sitting president falls on Sunday, 29 October. The FUMC says it will hold a special song-spiration of birthday celebration for a true Methodist and Mother of the Nation, Liberia on 29 October.

The Church says the event is its way of saying happy birthday to President Sirleaf. It urges the public to tune in to local broadcaster Hott Fm from 10:30am to noon on Sunday for live broadcast and beautiful songs for a patriot.

Mrs. Sirleaf who is expected to turn over power through a democratic transition process in January 2018 became first African elected female head of state in 2006 after a 2005 election.

She has since won a second term in 2011, enabling her to rule Liberia for 12 uninterrupted years. Though still in power, Liberians in some quarters appear to became missing her administration for its high level of tolerance for free speech and press freedom.
