St. Mary’s Catholic School flogs Muslim Congress in debate

It was a joyful weekend for students of the St. Mary’s Catholic School in Duala, Bushrod Island after they defeated Muslim Congress High School on New Port Street, Monrovia in the Inter-high school debate competition.

The competition,held last Friday, July 10thin the auditorium of the Monrovia YMCA on Broad Street, saw Muslim Congress going down to St. Mary’s Catholic School 73 to 61 points in the final scores.

The debate competition, which was organized by Divine’s Event and Consultancy Incorporated on 9thStreet,Sinkoris aimed at providing a platform for high school students to discuss national issues.

Chief Executive Officer for Divine Event and Consultancy, Alex F. Divine, said the idea is to keep the students together as they prepare to go for brake, saying, “We notice that many of our students these days are turning into politicians by discussing issues of national concern; based upon that we taught it wise to organize this program where they can better discuss issues without any fear of thought”.

The exercise brought together thousands of students from 16 schools in Montserrado County, including Muslim Congress High School, St. Mary’s Catholic High School, and Seventh Day Adventist High School, among others.

He outlined three main objectives for coming up with the idea, among them creating a platform for students to come together and exchange ideas through debate; educate students how to discuss and debate fundamental issues that usually spark up in the country, and to encourage academic excellence among high school students.

Divine said if a child is doing good in school his or her parents will be able to tell from his or her output.

The CEO said he was impressed with the turnout of students to support their respective schools, saying, “I am highly impressed for high school students to abandon their basic schedules and come to listen to debate; it speaks volumes; it means that students these days are eager to learn, and we as parents or guardians must give them the necessary support they need because they will someday become the future leaders of this country”.

He added that the entire inter-high school competition is to mainly grab the concept, and knowledge of students, because the first winner of the competition stands a chance to benefit US$1,000, while the second winner will also benefit US$750 and the third place winner will receive US$500 cash prizes.

During the debate, the two schools that reached the final discussed the topic,“Parents are Responsible for Child or Children selling in the streets with the St. Mary’s Catholic School in the affirmative, while the Muslim Congress High School on the negative. Editing by Jonathan Browne
