Strike Action At St. Timothy Hospital

Report monitored here from Robertsport, Grand Cape Mount County suggests that some (92 health workers at the Saint Timothy Government Hospital are on a “go-slow” action in demand of 4-month salary arrears.

The action by the health workers began since 31 May, and is reported to have paralyzed operations at the hospital.

The striking workers include Professional Nurses, Nurse Aides, as well as other support staff of the hospital.  According to our correspondent, the arrears owed the health workers cover February, March, April and May.

Hospital sources told our correspondent that about 3-days ago, the Health Ministry in Monrovia sent a single check for the month of April, thus leaving out the rest. The action by the workers is said to be causing difficulties for hundreds of visitors to the hospital on a regular basis for treatment.

An elderly woman believed to be in her 40s, said the strike action by the angry staff has victimized them because of the lack of attention.

When contacted, authorities at the hospital confirmed the strike, but said they were doing everything to put the situation under control.

Aaron Massalley, the County Health Administrator told this paper that despite the workers “go slow” action, there were very few of them who still go to work to contend with the influx of patients on a daily basis at the hospital.
