Tension brews in Nimba

Tension is reported to be brewing among citizens of Dumpa Town in District Number Seven Nimba County as a result of the death of a nineteen-year old man.

Vardah Vaye was allegedly stabbed by Chris Seegbay, 26- a situation creating serious rift between the familoes of the victim and the suspect.

According to our Nimba County Correspondent, the intensity of the rift between the two families has resulted to the burning of several rice farms in the area.

Some residents of the town are reported to have even fled the area for their lives.

Since the death of Vardah Vaye, youth of Dumpa Town and members of the victim’s family have gone on the rampage destroying valuable properties.

Aggrieved youth are quoted as saying they were not pleased about the manner in which their colleague was killed.

Dumpa Town has constantly been conflict-prone, especially a Land dispute which has lasted for about a year now.   Due to tension, Dumpa Town is now deserted. 

In another development, Land disputes are still on the Increase in Ganta, Nimba County.

The Head of local groups based in the county, Ganta Community Forum,

Mr. William Teage, has disclosed tghat since the inception of their organization in the city, it has made some progress in addressing a few land dispute cases.

Mr.Teage said despite the involvement of other international NGOs to include the Norway Refugee Council or NRC and others, in settling land disputes in Ganta, there were still several unresolved problems.

The Ganta Community Forum Chairman noted that his organization has spent three-thousand, Six-hundred United States dollars to undertake land dispute resolution, while plans were underway to address some others.

Mr. Teage said the amount was provided by a US-based organization, Tetch Tetch DPK.

According to him, the Tetch Tetch DPK also made available some amount to paid teachers and staff of a government school in Ganta- the Ganta Public or the Child Friendly School.

He noted that for citizens of the country to peacefully co-exist, there was a need to address their plight.

Mr. Teage disclosed  that some citizens currently in possession of disputed lands  in the city have received cash compensations from government to return such properties to their rightful owners, but to no avail up to present.

The Ganta Community Forum Chairman urged the government to visit the city to address the situation.
