Three Hooked in Ecobank’s Robbery

Theft at Ecobank -Liberia is continuing abated, with no sign of halting. Just 12 months, several burglaries have taken place at the bank’s main complex in Central Monrovia Ashmun Street office, as well as its outstation branches.Just recently again, the Ecobank branch in Kakata, was for the second time in few weeks, struck by ‘robbers.’

Police Spokesman George Bardue told this paper that three suspected Nigerian armed robbers-Francis Ezeji, Bartu Chukwu Agolo and Onuegbu Frank Chidozie were arrested for their alleged involvement in the recent US$350,000 hijack, while 3 other unidentified suspects were still on the run.

One of the bank’s drivers and a Bank Manager were assaulted while in route from Kakata to Wealla and Salala, Police Spokesman George Bardue told the New Dawn Thursday.

According to Bardue, the occupants of a vehicle marked BC 1167, encountered six armed robbers under gun point, with all the money taken away, but US$152, 191 of the amount was retrieved from the three suspected robbers arrested.

The three arrested suspects are currently at the Central Police Headquarters undergoing police investigation.  He said police were still in hot pursuit of the rest. Despite the much publicized burglaries at Ecobank-Liberia for the past months, the Central Bank of Liberia continues to remain mute.

Even if  there had been moves by the CBL to investigate the situation or institute measures to curtail such crimes, which are creating bad public relations for Ecobank -Liberia, it may, perhaps be behind the curtains.
