UN Human Rights opens office in Liberia

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has opened a country office in Liberia.Speaking at the program Tuesday, 26 June OHCHR Country Representative Uchenna Emelonye says through the Human Right and Protection Service of UNMIL, the OHCHR has been engaged in the promotion and protection of Human Rights in Liberia since 2003.


He says the agreement with the Government of Liberia to set up an OHCHR Country office, reaffirms the purposes and principles of the charter of the United Nations.
He says it also recognizes the importance of observing the provisions contained in the UDHR and other international human rights instruments.

The Country Representative says OHCHR will assist the Government on strategies, programmes and measures to be implemented to promote and protect human rights here.

He thanks government for willingly allowing and warmly welcoming OHCHR country office in Liberia, assuring that OHCHR will assist the law Reform Commission in the audit and identification of laws that are inconsistent with international human rights norms and standards as well as providing technical assistance in legislative oversight.
