UNFPA donates vehicle to MoH

Speaking Friday 29 January during the presentation ceremony, UNFPA Representative Dr. Oluremi Sogunro said his agency would continue to support the Government of Liberia’s efforts to reduce maternal and newborn deaths in the country.
According to Dr. Sogunro, partners including UNFPA are aware that if Liberia is to prevent pregnant women from dying during childbirth, there must be adequate support to accelerate the roadmap for Reduction of Maternal Mortality.
“We are handing this vehicle to the Family Health Division as part of our contributions to the department to ensure that there is adequate supervision of all activities aimed at improving the maternal and newborn health sector in Liberia. We want to demonstrate our commitment to do more because it is needless, unnecessary and unacceptable to see women dying because they are giving life”; Dr. Sogunro said.
He disclosed that the donation was part of the H4 Plus support to the Government of Liberia. The H4 Plus Project which was launched in 2013 is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) through WHO, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNAIDS and UN Women, implemented by the Government and partners.
According to a press release, it contributes to Government’s efforts in strengthening the delivery of quality rights-based health services, as well as increase demand, improving access to and utilization of maternal newborn health care services particularly in Grand Kru, Maryland, River Gee, Gbarpolu, Grand Cape Mount and Rivercess Counties, respectively.
Meanwhile, the Director of Family Health Division at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Joseph Kerkula, has commended UNFPA and the H4 Plus Project for the support to Liberia in the provision of quality and adequate reproductive health services to the people.

Dr. Kerkula said the donation would go a long way in empowering the Family Health Division to adequately monitor the implementation of the H4 Plus Project as well as other initiatives aimed at improving the maternal and newborn health system of Liberia.
