UNMIL dedicates First police depot in Henry Town

The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) has dedicated a new police depot built in Henry Town in Korminga Chiefdom, Gbarpolu County, under its Quick Impact Project.

Speaking at the handover ceremony at the weekend, District Commissioner Olu Nangbah said the police station is one of the major projects undertaken by UNMIL in Henry Town.

He observed that prior to the deployment of UNMIL in the town; the police used a makeshift structure which made easy the escape of criminals and others in conflict with the law.

Turning over the keys to the police station to the Police County Commander, Varsay Nyen, and Gbarpolu County Acting Superintendent Yassah Fallah thanked UNMIL for the building and admonished the officers assigned to Henry’s Town to take good care of the structure.

For his part, Gbarpolu County District #1 Representative Alfred Koiwood said he was requested by citizens of Henry Town to ensure they have access to justice, something that resulted in the UNMIL Quick Impact Project that built the police station.

Representative Koiwood said even though the police station was not fully ready for operations, it was disheartening that there was no magistrate court in the town to enhance the justice system. He said the duty of the police is to arrest and investigate and thereafter send to court would-be defendants for trial.

Also in remarks at the ceremony, the head of UNMIL Team in Gbarpolu County, Yankuba Sheriff, said UNMIL taught it necessary to construct the police station in Henry Town because of the increasing crime rate in that part of the country.

Sherif expressed concern about the lack of safe drinking water in the area, noting that the police station will be operating without safe drinking water for prisoners and sanitation in the prison, LINA reports.
