Two senior officials of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) on Monday, February 15, 2016 paid a courtesy visit to the National Elections Commission (NEC) in Monrovia.
The two UNMIL Officials are the Special Representative of the Secretary General (UNSRSG) Farid Zarif andthe Deputy Special Representative for Peace Consolidation, Antonio Vigilante. The two UN Officials held discussions with the Chairman of the Commission, Jerome Korkoya, Co-Chairman Sarah Toe and Executive Director, Lamin Lighe.
TheUNSRSG lauded the Commission for the level of credibility and integrity it continues to demonstrate in the implementation of its mandate, especially in the conduct of public elections in the country.
Mr. Zarif saidsuch credibility would be further enhanced by the successful conduct of the impending 2017 Representative and Presidential Elections which are critical to the consolidation of peace and stability in the country.
The UNMIL Boss called on all stakeholders in the electoral process, including political parties, civil society and religious organizations as well as educational institutions to compliment the efforts of the Commission by actively participating in voter education activities in order to elicit increased participation of eligible voters in electoral activities across the country.
He urged the Commission to submit to UNMIL specific areas in which it would need assistance for the 2017 elections which UNMIL would use to lobby for donor support for the elections.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Commission informed the two UNMIL officials of the level of preparations being made by the Commission for the successful conduct of the 2017 Representative and Presidential elections.
Chairman Jerome Korkoya named some of the activities as voter registration, enhancement of elections Complaint Hearing mechanism, capacity building, civic and voter education. Chairman Korkoya lauded UNMIL for the level of logistical and security support it has provided the Commission over the years.-Press release
