The governing Unity Party is taking its campaign to every sector of Liberia, including the sports arena, a strategic unifying force. The party has donated about 17,000 balls for distribution among three federations in the country.
The Basketball, Football, Kickball and Handball federations are beneficiaries of the donation. The UP reiterated its belief in the vision of the young people of Liberia particularly in helping to develop their minds through sports.
Making the donation Tuesday, the campaign manager of the Unity Party Tornolah Virpilah, said the donation is intended to promote sports in the country, adding that the footballs and basketballs will be distributed throughout the country.
Mr. Virpilah said the donation is the party’s way of not only promoting sports but helping to develop the minds of the youth. He said UP Standard Bearer President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is committed to developing and promoting sports throughout Liberia.
Mr. Virpilah praised the youths of Liberia for their commitment to sports, and added that the future of Liberia rests in the hands of the youths. Receiving the donation, the Director of Competition at the Liberia Football Association, Mr. Benedict Yarsiah, praised the UP for the gesture towards the promotion of sports in Liberia.
Mr. Yarsiah said the various federations are accepting the donation in good faith, saying one cannot denounce sports from politics. He said though sports cannot be distanced from sports, “but I advice that sports be left with the direct sports technicians.”
Mr. Yarsiah said the LFA was overwhelmed by the gesture from the governing party, and assured that the donation will be distributed among federations in all of the counties. He described the donation as timely and wonderful, and urged the Unity Party to continue supporting sports in Liberia.
