Veep Taylor undermines govt.

The Acting National Chairman for the People Unification Party (PUP) is accusing Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor of undermining the Coalition-led government of President George Manneh Weah in which she is second in command.

Chairman Moses Kqechie on a local radio station, notes that Vice President Taylor has planted “seeds of discord” among citizens of Bong County by reportedly dismissing chiefs and traditional leaders, who are not partisans of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change. President Weah has since ordered the dismissed local officials be reinstated without any condition.

The PUP chair notes that the action of the Vice President does not only carry the spirit of undermining, but violates the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, which gives appointing and dismissal powers to the President, not the Vice President, as being displayed by the ex-wife of detained former President Charles Taylor, who is serving 50 years sentence in Britain for aiding and abetting former rebels in neighboring Sierra Leone.

Mr. Kqechie recalls that during the recent senatorial by-election in Bomg County won by Dr. Henrique Tokpa, Madam Taylor reportedly threatened the people of Bong if they failed to vote CDC’s Candidate Representative Marvin Cole, she would turn her back to the county and her support and humanitarian activities will go to southeastern Liberia, instead.

The PUP, which formed alliance with the former ruling Unity Party during the 2017 Representatives and Presidential elections, says comments of the Vice President suggest she does not mean well for the Pro Poor government and her boss, President George Manneh Weah.He cautions that President Weah should be very careful with his vice president, who is already trying to undercut his functions.

Chairman Kqechie also quotes a local newspaper’s report that Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor is still collecting gas coupons intended for the position of Bong County Senator while at the same time receiving entitlements to the office of Vice President. A Capitol Building source says VP Taylor has been signing for the coupons in the past six months.

But the Director of Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Solomon Ware, who phoned in on the show denied the allegation, terming it as mere propaganda and smear campaign against his boss.

Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor served as Senator for Bong County from 2006 until she was elected Vice President on the ticket of the Coalition for Democratic Change in the 2017 presidential elections.

Kqechie notes the Vice President’s action has claimed the attention of members of the Senate, who are said to be awaiting the return of Senate President Pro-Tempore Albert Chie to address the issue.

Information gathered suggests every senator is entitled to 2,200 gallons of gasoline while those in leadership receive 2,400 gallons, respectively as part of their amenities.
