VP Taylor to host Sheroes conference

Vice President Jewel Howard – Taylor will play host to an organization of women called ‘Sheroes’.Making the disclosure on state radio over the weekend, Vice President Taylor says women are coming for a conference here to unite the fire in Liberian women and also encourage them to contribute in the society.

The Sheroes conference which highlights women empowerment will bring together women from around Africa to come to Liberia and encourage Liberian women on empowering themselves in society.

The conference will take place from October 17 to 19, 2018 in Monrovia.According to Madam Taylor, the program is all about women and how they can step up in the society.However, VP Taylor notes that men will be there to discuss some of the lapses of women when they are climbing the ladders and to recommend things that women need to do to get in leadership.

She says this conference has been held in Nigeria and other African countries before, and Liberia will be hosting it too for the first time.The Vice President observes that there is low number of women not just in the legislature, but in the entire government here, thereby encouraging Liberians to do more to get women elected and empowered.

On the continental front, Madam Taylor also says the number of African women in leadership is very low, with just two African female Vice Presidents on the continent so far.According to her, this conference is very important for Liberian women because they need to come together to handle new issues and programs.

At the same time, Vice President Taylor is urging women here to get involved into the pro – poor agenda and not just sit and allow men to do everything.Meanwhile, Vice President Taylor announces that President George Manneh Weah will be honored as “Sheroes HeforShe” champion.

According to her, President Weah has always been in the interest of women leadership and he deserves the honor.Also speaking, the first female Chief Executive Officer of LoneStar Cell MTN Uche Ofodile says in almost every organization and workplace including MTN, there are limited women staffs as compared to their male counterparts.

According to the MTN official, all the years that LoneStar Cell MTN has been in existence, she is just the first female CEO of the company.

Madam Ofodile believes that when she leaves this position, another male might even take over.

She says “Sheroes ” is really timely because in Liberia and a cross Africa, there is need to continue to empower women and put them in leadership.

Madam Ofodile adds that MTN is a lead sponsor of this conference, noting that they will be showcasing to the Liberian women that they can do the same as other women in the society.

According to her, people see her and the Vice President to be in high positions, but she thinks they do not know the journey behind these positions they are occupying today.

Madam Ofodile indicates that Sheroes conference allows women to get on the same path.

The MTN CEO also says that conference will enable women to tell their stories to inspire other women that will listen, and encourage them to move on.–Edited by Winston W. Parley
