Weah comes fighting

President George Manneh Weah is seizing every occasion here to counter opposition against his decisions, including officials’ appointments and the sudden signing of two controversial loans worth nearly a billion US Dollars in the space of five months for road connectivity, insisting that he is not afraid to make decision.

“I am not afraid to make decision because I believe that anyone can do what he ought to do,” he said Thursday, 21 June in Monrovia while commissioning several senior officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Among those President Weah commissioned last week was Health Minister Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah whose appointment witnessed a public protest that contributed to delay in her confirmation by the Liberian Senate in the wake of a complaint that she had an unresolved legal battle surrounding the death of a patient at her private hospital.

Her confirmation hearing was abruptly aborted in early March by the Senate, but she was however confirmed later in the Senate’s executive session on 22 March, void of the press.

His government is being criticized for signing a US$536m road financing loan agreement with Eton Financing, while others continue to cast doubt over the credibility of the firm.

There is also criticism against the government for signing a US$420m loan agreement with EBOMAF SA, an engineering firm belonging to President Weah’s Burkinabe friend Mahamadou Bonkoungou.

President Weah says he knows he has a lot of critics because of the decisions he makes, but he maintains that he has to make a decision. “I know I have lot of critics because of the decision that I make, but I have to make a decision,” he says.

Continuing his addressing to the newly commissioned senior officials, President Weah says “whether it’s you or it’s them, … we have to sta rt making a decision”.He argues that if he did not believe in the theory that everyone can succeed, today he would not be at the presidency.

Mr. Weah’s comments on Thursday were a second batch of counter attack against his critics in just one week, having earlier told a gathering of some of his officials Wednesday, 20 June in Margibi not to worry about criticisms against him.

“I will ask you to continue to pray with me; don’t worry about those that are talking. We have talked about 171 years, nothing happened; now we want to leave a legacy, join me, those that believe in me. Join me let us build this country,” the President said Wednesday, 20 June in Margibi County near Fendall Campus while cutting ribbon to a sample of housing units he intends to construct free – of – charge for poor people along major highways in the country.
