Weah defends LEITI’s appointment

Liberia’s President George Manneh Weah says he is not breaking laws here, following a wave of criticisms locally and internationally for appointing a new head at the Liberia Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (LEITI) Secretariat.

Addressing a Press Stake Out with visiting Deputy UN Secretary General Madam Amina J. Mohammed in Monrovia Thursday, 22 March, Mr. Weah argued that he didn’t break any law and urged his critics to go back to the constitution and read those guidelines.

U.K. – based watchdog group Global Witness has since condemned Mr. Weah’s appointment of Mr. Gabriel Nyenkan and the subsequent removal of LEITI Head of Secretariat Mr. Konah Karmo from office by use of police force as illegal.

But President Weah responding to a question on if he would rescind his decision, he responded by recalling that in January this year he was given a title of Commander – in – Chief, so everyone works at his will and pleasure.

“And the president decides who is capable,” he argues and notes further that “I’m not breaking laws; I’m making appointments, those names that I’m putting forward I believe that they can run this country.”

He informs the public that he will continue to nominate and to appoint people because that’s the right thing to do. Mr. Weah complains that to constitute a government is slow because “every Liberian that you call forward has problem.”

He says there’s nobody here without a problem, so you have to continue to look at the laws, arguing that everything he is doing is within the confines of the constitution.

There have been multiple calls here for Mr. Weah to withdraw the appointment of Mr. Nyenkan who is reported to have used police force to remove Mr. Karmo from office as head of LEITI Secretariat.

Mr. Nyenkan has just failed to get reelected as Montserrado County representative in the 2017 polls before being appointed by Mr. Weah to a job that Global Witness argues is not within the authority of the president to make appointment.
