Weah’s garbage campaign overwhelms communities

Several communities in Electoral District #16 in Montserrado County involved in the recently launched “Weah for Clean City” campaign are said to be overwhelmed with stockpile of garbage being placed at various locations on Bushrod Island.

Addressing reporters on 7 March in the Municipal Borough of New Kru Town, the Supervisor of the Bong Mines Bridge Community Mr. Theophilus J. Nimely, named Bong Mines Bridge, New Kru Town, Duala and St. Paul Bridge as areas without any designated point to dispose of the garbage.

Mr. Nimely disclosed that since the clean-up campaign started, these communities continue to witness the stockpiling of dirt in various parts including market places and roadsides without anything being done to remove them.

He also discloses that there is an urgent need for the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) to deploy garbage removing trucks and yellow machines to work along with the communities in removing the garbage to avoid health hazy to inhabitants.

He calls on the MCC to further provide garbage dump buckets to dump dirt to enhance the work of the campaign. He then expressed gratitude to President George M. Weah, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), and Representative Dixon Seebo for the opportunity provided them to contribute to the cleanup the communities.

Meanwhile, the Governor of the Municipal Borough of New Kru Town Madam Alice Weah who conducted the recruitment of individuals involved in the project, said that during the planning meeting of the cleanup exercise held in Monrovia, representatives of the various communities were assured by the MCC representative that the Corporation would work along with the communities in removing dirt or garbage from their communities.

The statement of Governor Weah comes amidst confusion that erupted between some people involved with the ten-day cleanup campaign project and MCC staff on the placement of garbage in the streets and communities corners since the exercise started.
