WFP hands over logistical unit at R.I.A to LAA

The World Food Programme (WFP) here says, as part of its efforts to continue supporting government’s logistics capacity, it will today 18 April, begin the first of a gradual handover of its emergency supply chain assets established during the Ebola outbreak in 2014/2015.

At the event, WFP will hand over one of its largest logistical hubs located at the Roberts International Airport (RIA) in Margibi County to the Liberia Airport Authority that will immediately assume full maintenance and management responsibilities. The handover is expected to increase the government’s own capacity in emergency preparedness and response.

The WFP Logistical Hub at the RIA consists of vital physical assets and materials including large storage tents, forklifts, generators, computers and accessories that were developed and deployed during the Ebola emergency response in Liberia in 2014/15,

WFP Liberia at the height of the Ebola crisis organized and equipped five supply chain asset units including storage hubs in Monrovia and the Roberts International Airport, Forward Logistics Base (FLB) in five counties, and Mobile Storage Units in all fifteen counties. 

WFP’s Country Director Mr Sory Ouane said WFP is pleased with the handover. “We are committed to partnering with relevant government agencies including the General Services Agency and the Liberia Airport Authority in improving the government’s supply chain capability to adequately manage and implement its logistical needs nationwide.”

In September 2015, WFP embarked on capacity strengthening of relevant government functionaries through on-the-job and indoor training of 25 government staff (nationwide) assigned with WFP from the General Service Agency (GSA). The training which continued in Monrovia in February 2016 was also rolled out in Buchanan, Harper, and Gbarnga.-Press release
