Who killed Journalist Tyron Brown?

Circumstances surrounding the reported murder of a journalist working for privately-owned Super FM/TV seem to be shrouded in secrecy with neither community residents nor associates speaking up.

But Journalist Tyron Brown, reporter, camera operator and video editor, was reportedly found dead early Monday, 16 April in Duport Road, Paynesville, outside Monrovia.

Police spokesman Moses Carter, was not readily available for comment, as several calls placed in by this paper late Monday went unanswered.

However, sources from the National Police Headquarters on Capitol Hill confirm the mysterious death, detailing that the victim was found in Duport Road community and subsequently taken to Benson Hospital near Redlight in Paynesville where doctors pronounced him dead.

Police sources further detail that the late Journalist Brown was stabbed twice on his side and once on his back, leaving deep wounds on his body.

Sources at the National Police Headquarters also reveal that during search, Police found US$11 plus L$300 and a cell phone on the victim, noting that a massive investigation has been launched.

As of Monday evening, no one had been arrested in connection with the murder, and police have called on the public to help in proving information that would lead to arrest of whoever is involved.

Meanwhile, the Press Union of Liberia expresses shock over the vicious killing of Journalist Tyron Brown. In a press release, PUL quotes family sources as saying the deceased had served his church on the previous Sunday when he provided technical assistance up to his gruesome murder by unknown individuals.

Tyron’s remains are now deposited at the Abraham Anderson Funeral Parlors opposite Stephen A. Tolber Estate in Gardnersville, suburb of Monrovia, while awaiting Police forensic examination.PUL calls for a speedy Police investigation which will include an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The umbrella organization for practicing journalists in the country says the killing of Tyron has increased the level of fear in the Journalism Community in Liberia and has further strengthened the case for self-censorship in the traditional journalism sphere here.

Until his murder, Journalist Tyron Brown worked as a reporter, camera operator and video editor at Super FM & TV, owned by Liberian businessman George Kailando, who resigned from active politics recently.

“Journalist Tyron Brown’s unfortunate death comes in the wake of the escalation of threats and intimidation of journalists and the independent media by some officials of government”, the PUL statement concludes. The Management of Super FM & TV is yet to make any official comment on the mysterious murder of one of its staff.
