You must be agents of change

The Chief Executive Officer of the Searchlight Communication Inc. and Managing Editor of the New Dawn Newspaper, Othello B. Garblah urges graduates walking out of high schools across the country to serve as agents of change.

Serving as Guest Speaker at the 5th commencement convocation of the James N. Davies S.D.A. High School in Paynesville over the weekend, Mr. Garblah says in order for students to become agents of change, they must first commit themselves to their goals.

“For me, I would define change as putting aside those attitudes and behaviors that have no positive impact on you, your family or community”, he says.Speaking on the theme; “You too Must Be an Agent of Change”, the New Dawn CEO notes the commencement exercise is being held at the time when the nation is going through serious socio-economic crisis, adding, “Our currency has taken a nose dive against the United States dollars” which has caused the Liberian dollar to depreciate.

He continues that graduation ceremonies are being held across Liberia when parents and guardians don’t know how they will pay fees and tuition for their kids for the next academic year, especially at a time when nobody cares anymore about being morally upright, and when sex and money for grades have become a new normal in the school system.

He says to be an agent of change; one should first acknowledge there are problems, but quickly notes that Liberia is not the only nation in the world that has gone thru crisis. Pointing out that lot of countries have gone thru crisis but what will make a difference is choosing a new paradigm.

“We must now begin to ask ourselves individually what I can do to make Liberia better and stop blaming the government or other people for our underdevelopment. One way or the other we all have contributed to shipping the nation to where it is today.”

He calls on parents and guardians to be role model for their children, reminding that “whatever we do before them whether good or bad sticks; you must inculcate values and discipline in your children if they must make impact in the society.”

Turning to the school, he urges teachers there to serve as second role model for their students by setting good examples for them, adding that students should be able to speak up to their parents, telling them my teacher says this is wrong.

He cautions the graduates to make a commitment to themselves that no matter the situation they would remain focus to their education in order to make greater impacts in society and Liberia at large.

“I know we all want to go places, do things that we want to do, but we all stop at but, which is an argument for limitations.”According to Mr. Garblah, when people argue for limitation, they will have to keep them, and anything you argue for, he says, is what you get.
