The Ministry of Youth and Sports is training more than 100 cadets who will be provided short-term employment in the public sector. National Coordinator of the Cadets Program at the Ministry, Samuel K. Mappy, said the one-week intensive training will build the capacities of the participants in the areas of communication and team building, leadership, office ethics and skills.
Mappy said the training will also include e-mail etiquette and basic computer skills, among others. The workshop being held under the theme ‘’Building Minds and Enhancing Skills of Youth in Public Service,’’ is also meant to re-introduce the cadet-system and empower young people to take up challenges.
The cadet system in the Liberian government started in the 1950s, but became dormant as a result of the civil conflict. Mr. Mappy told the Liberia News Agency Wednesday that amongst the participants are two physically challenged persons – a female and male. He added that female participants comprise 37 percent of the total number of participants, while male participation is 63 percent.
He explained that the exercise is being carried out in collaboration with the ‘’President’s Young Professionals’’, a group that recruits and trains young people for public service.
